The McHenry County Department of Health said Tuesday it has confirmed a second case of West Nile virus this year.

The latest case involves a Lake in the Hills man, who county officials did not name. The man began showing symptoms on Sept. 26 and has since developed viral meningitis. He is being treated at a Chicago hospital.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said there have been 52 reported cases of West Nile virus in Illinois this year; four of them fatal.

MCHenry County health officials advise residents to contact a doctor if they experience symptoms that include a fever, headache and body aches. Symptoms may take 3-15 days to surface after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

The mosquito-borne disease is considered a threat until the first hard frost.
