U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Dist. 14), a member of the Executive Committee of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, said on Friday that he is co-sponsoring the Global Food Security Act of 2015 (H.R. 1567) to reduce global hunger and poverty by improving food security and nutrition, especially for women and children in developing countries.

The legislation aims to increase productivity and business-survival conditions for small-scale producers and promote nutritional behavior that improves maternal and child health. The bill supports collaboration between U.S. universities and private institutions in developing countries to promote agricultural development and innovation. It also reauthorizes and strengthens the Feed the Future food program, which has helped more than 7 million small farmers in developing countries boost crop production.

"As we celebrate World Food Day, it's clear a collective approach and supporting less-developed countries is key to fighting global poverty," Hultgren said. "By collaborating with organizations in developing countries and by focusing on women and children, we make sure that we target society's most vulnerable populations. This strategy also makes sure that taxpayer dollars are used in the most efficient and effective way."
