The Board of Building Construction will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21.

The commission will review the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) and consider it for adoption at the Board of Building Construction meeting on Thursday, Jan. 21.

The meeting will commence at 6 p.m. in the second floor conference room at the Department of Community Development, located at 121 W. Calhoun St.

The IBC contains the standardized building codes for all buildings except detached one and two-family homes and up to three-story townhouses. Building codes establish the minimum standards for designing and constructing multi-family units, hospitals, nursing homes and public buildings, with an emphasis on performance, public health and safety.

The IBC is the model for the building codes and permit processes adopted by local jurisdictions across the nation. The IBC is updated every three years.

The Board of Building Construction is an advisory commission which reviews and recommends variations and exceptions as well as proposed changes to the city's building codes. The recommended changes are taken to City Council for discussion and implementation. The commission meets when variations, exceptions, changes and updates in the building codes are being considered by the city.
