The Woodstock Electrical Commission voted to adopt the 2014 National Electrical Code (NEC) during its meeting this past week.
The commission took note that the differences between the current city’s code, the 2008 NEC and the 2014 set were not drastic. The commission approved the adoption with some amendments.
Among the amendments were rules associated with conduits and armored cables. The meeting notes indicated that conduits that are installed underground must be at least three-fourths of an inch. Surface-level electrical services are required to be housed in either galvanized rigid or metal conduits. Furthermore, unfinished basements must have exposed wiring within a conduit. Armored cable wires will only be allowed in one and two-family homes.
Armored cable wires may also be used in basement ceilings if sealed prior to residents living in the home. This amendment would allow the addition of outlets utilizing this wire type if it is already present in the basement space.
The commission has disallowed non-metallic cables for use in the city unless used to extend existing circuits of the same kind.
