The Crystal Lake City Council approved issuing special-use permits for the installation of new bleachers at Crystal Lake South High School during its Feb. 2 meeting.

The council had considered the two special-use permits, two variants and a waiver from an application fee for the installation, which had been recommended for approval by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

According to an earlier McHenry Times article, the school said the addition of new bleachers would be able to seat approximately 3,260 people. The home bleachers are planned to stand 42 feet tall and the visiting side bleachers would be approximately 22 feet tall.

Concerns were expressed by council members regarding parking at the school and overflow parking at a church that is close to the campus. School representatives said that overflow parking would most likely be utilized up to five times during the regular football season and would increase with playoff games held at the school.

Both special permits were approved, and variations on limits to accessory structures and parking space requirements were also approved.

The waiver request was denied by a unanimous vote.
