The McHenry County Regional Planning Commission discussed the county’s Agricultural Resources Review at its meeting Thursday.

The review consists of a plan that would implement policies in order to preserve the agricultural areas within the county and to ensure that agricultural activities can be carried out and the county can preserve its rural portions.

During this meeting members of staff presented information regarding the trends that are becoming apparent in the farming community, statistics and other data regarding local food assessments.

A copy of the Agricultural Resources Policy statement was also made available within the agenda packet with notes regarding respective item’s efficacy. Among these are the encouragement of legislation that supports the right to farm and recognition of the agriculture sector as an economic priority. It also states that the county’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy identifies agriculture as one of the strengths of the region.

There are a total of 21 policy items that are included within this document. One area of policy that has been determined to be inconsistent with current practice is the encouragement of funding for agricultural easement and farmland protection for the county. The edited document states that a funding source has not been found.
