Woodstock is pursuing a special census.
Woodstock's city manager recently said a special census should be conducted because of recent population growth in certain areas in the city.
The notice states that there have been an estimated 659 residents that have moved to the city since the previous federal census in 2010. The state reimburses municipalities approximately $151 a year for each resident that is served by the local government.
The city manager’s notice also indicates that with the results of a special census could make Woodstock a home-rule community. Home rule would exempt Woodstock from property tax cap laws. The city has not indicated that levy requests will increased . The notice also states that approximately 80 percent of the communities in state have home rule.
Despite concerns that have been raised by some community members, the city’s status as a home rule city will not automatically raise any taxes. Any decision to do so will go through the normal means of being considered and voted on by the city council with public commentary being taken into consideration.
