The village of Woodstock said the final stage of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Route 14 widening project has commenced, and residents should avoid U.S. Route 14 because of traffic delays.
The reconstruction and widening of Route 14 began in 2014. The $48 million dollar project replaced the old pavement between West Lake Shore Drive and state Route 176. South of Route 176 to Crystal Lake Avenue was widened and resurfaced. The roadway was upgraded to two,12-foot-wide lanes in each direction to improve traffic flow along the route. The improvements also included upgraded and new traffic lights.
The current stage of construction requires lane switching so workers can complete the work on the center lanes and medians. The outside lane in each direction will be open to traffic.
The Woodstock Public Works Department reminds drivers to watch for construction workers. The speed limits in the work zones will be strictly enforced; use caution through the active construction zone. In addition, avoid distractions such as cellphone use while driving.
All lanes will be open to traffic when this final phase of construction is finished. The project is on schedule for completion in fall.
