Prep update: Hornets off to strong start in boys' soccer

Soccer

Harvard's boys' soccer team went 18-3 last season in coach Victor Gonzalez's first year at the helm.

This year is off to an even-better start.

The Hornets began the 2016 season with a 4-0 record, which included winning the Grant Invitational for the first time in many years, Gonzalez said in an email interview.

Several key players from last season are back, including the team's top assist man in co-captain Alfredo Pichardo and co-captain Alonzo Carrillo, who had a team-high 22 goals.

Other top returners are co-captain Joel Juarez, Ismael Albarran, Gaby Popoca, Alexis Robles and Jesse Oros.

GIRLS' TENNIS

JOHNSBURG

The Skyhawks, who are in the new Kishwaukee River Valley Conference this season, started with a 2-4 record in duals.

Senior Paige King was 4-6 at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Abbie Cittadino was 8-2 at No. 2.

The doubles teams are senior Alyssia Altobelli and freshman Kamile Alkasaite at No. 1, seniors Stephanie Flebbe and Sophie Gasior at No. 2, senior Amy Bennett and junior Melinda McBride at No. 3, and senior Taylor Piggott and sophomore Aysha Ozmert at No. 4.

MARIAN CENTRAL CATHOLIC

No. 1 doubles team Cate and Caroline Yuk are coming off a second-place showing at the Belvidere Sectional and a state tournament berth, where they went 2-2. This season, they have continued their solid play by getting second at the Vernon Hills Cougar Invite, according to coach Craig Greenwald.

That performance was instrumental in the squad finishing second at the eight-team invite. Kelly Mink is at No. 1 singles, while Stephanie Velaceran is at No. 2.

Other key performers include Anna Keck, Jenna Walker and Sarah Zaballa.

Note: Not all teams' information was available at press time.
