To solicit public participation regarding road improvements for IL 31 in McHenry County, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced a public hearing 4-7 p.m. Feb. 8 at McHenry County College.

The campus address for the open house-style event is 4100 W. Shamrock Lane, McHenry, known as the McHenry County College’s Shah Center. Exhibits and presentations will be ongoing during the event, with the public forum slated to start at 6 p.m.

Focusing on the section of Route 31 between Illinois routes 176 and 120, IDOT foresees widening and reconstruction to yield two lanes in each direction of the highway with a median dividing northbound and southbound traffic. Additional improvements will regard bicycle and pedestrian access, as well as drainage upgrades.

The hearing concerns a preliminary engineering and environmental study, dubbed Phase I of the project. IDOT will request input on the “preferred alternative and Environmental Assessment (EA).” The EA can be accessed online at the address below or viewed at Prairie Grove Village Hall at 3125 Barreville Road; McHenry Public Library at 809 Front St.; or the Department’s District 1 office at 201 W. Center Court, in Schaumburg.

Participants can submit comments in several ways: talk individually with IDOT representatives between 4 and 7 p.m.; make a statement to a court reporter beginning at 6 p.m. during the public forum; or submit comments online. Comments will be accepted through March 10.
