U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL 6th District) applauded the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, according to a press release.
"The appointment of a special counsel to oversee the inquiry into Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election is a welcome development," Roskam said in the statement. "Former FBI Director Mueller is a man of the utmost integrity. I have complete confidence in his ability to conduct a thorough investigation, wherever the facts may lead."
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and the Justice Department announced the decision to appoint Mueller in late May. Mueller will not only oversee the investigation of alleged links between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russian government officials but also will have to authority to investigate possible charges of obstruction of justice against Trump.
Trump has denied any arrangement with the Russians or any role in alleged interference with the election, characterizing the appointment of Mueller and the investigation a “witch hunt.”
