McHenry County wants residents to take measures to protect themselves against contracting the West Nile virus, the county's health department said in a news release.
The virus is carried by mosquitoes, which means residents should eliminate breeding areas such as tires, gutters, catch basins and containers that can collect water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, especially in higher-than-expected temperatures.
Residents should also get rid of standing water and changes bird-bath water twice a week. Gutters and storm drains should be cleared of debris, swimming pools should be maintained with a good level of chlorine, and old tires should be thrown out.
Long-sleeve shirts and pants can prevent infection, as can the use of insect repellent.
West Nile virus causes fever and aches, with more dangerous symptoms possible. The people most at risk for the disease are those 50 and older.
No human cases of the disease have been reported.
