McHENRY COUNTY: Health Department announces 2018 Anti-Tobacco Media Design Contest winner

Healthrecap

McHenry County issued the following announcement on May 31.

World No Tobacco Day was May 31. The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) marked the occasion by recognizing Jasmin Vilchis, a student at McHenry County College, as the winner of the 14th annual Media Design contest. In keeping with this year’s theme of “the truth about E-Cigarettes”, Jasmin’s winning design was a black and white illustration accompanied by the caption “you can’t chase your dreams if you give up your lungs”.

Jasmin was presented with a commendation certificate by Joseph E. Gugle, Interim Administrator for MCDH and will be honored at the June 23rd Board of Health Meeting. “CDC statistics tell us that roughly 13% of young adults are smokers. This contest is one way of spreading the word in McHenry County that smoking any tobacco, even electronic cigarettes is unhealthy.”, said Joseph.

Richmond-Burton High School student Sarah Ames was the runner up for this year’s contest. Sarah’s entry portrayed a heart and the caption “Stop filling us with lies! E-Cigarettes are unsafe just like real cigarettes.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States. A lesser known fact is that smokers are 30–40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than nonsmokers. And if you’re a smoker you have twice the risk for gum disease as a nonsmoker.

Sponsored by the McHenry County Department of Health, funding for the annual Anti-Tobacco Media Contest is provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Winning entries can be viewed at www.mcdh.info. If you need help quitting smoking, visit www.quityes.org or Call the Illinois Tobacco Quitline at 1-866-QUIT-YES or TDD/TYY 1-800-501-1068.
