Alden-Hebron SD 19 School District Board met Sept. 18.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

President Norton called the regular meeting of the Board of Education of Alden-Hebron Community Consolidated Unit School District #19 to order at 7:00 p.m.

Roll Call

PRESENT: Mr. Norton, Mr. Winkelman, Mrs. Combs, Mr. Madsen, Mrs. Smith ABSENT: Mr. Eskridge, Mr. Stauss

ALSO PRESENT:

Dr. Debbie Ehlenburg-Superintendent, Tim Hayunga-MS/HS Principal, Pat Syens-Treasurer, Cyndie Erckfritz-Transportation, Jodie Kanaly-ES PE, Liz Elbrecht-ES STEM, Colleen Geils- Media Specialist, Patti Peisert-1st Grade, Karen Fallon-Kindergarten, Judy Marquardt-Smith- Reading Specialist.

 FOIA 9/7/18: SmartProcure—requesting information regarding purchase orders, vendor names and addresses, items and prices. Satisfied by Mrs. Alfonso on 9/12/18.

Correspondence

 FOIA 9/10/18 (9/13/18): HBO Real Sports—requesting information about how many students played 11-man football in the 2013-14 and 2017-18 school years, how many of those students received free or reduced-priced lunch, and finally, what percentage of AHHS population received free or reduced-priced lunch during those school years. Satisfied on 9/17/18.

COMMUNICATIONS

Public Comments

Pat Syens presented the proposed budget for FY19 to the BOE and those present at the meeting.

Mrs. Smith moved, Mr. Winkelman seconded open the Public Hearing for the FY19 Budget.

Dr. Ehlenburg stated that the proposed budget has been on display for at least 30 days in the District Office as required. Nobody has been in to see it.

Mr. Madsen moved, Mrs. Combs seconded to close the Public Hearing regarding the FY19 Budget.

AYES: Mr. Norton, Mr. Winkelman, Mrs. Combs, Mr. Madsen, Mrs. Smith

NAYS: None

ABSENT: Mr. Eskridge, Mr. Stauss Motion Carried

Staff Comments

Mrs. Erckfritz stated that it reflects well that the custodians have matching staff shirts.

Mrs. Elbrecht was in attendance to introduce the new STEM program. She thanked the BOE for allowing her the opportunity to teach and for the ES students to experience the STEM program. She stated that the students are learning to work in groups and learning the language of STEM. Mrs. Elbrecht shared a PowerPoint presentation showing subjects students have researched and projects they have been working on including Pushes and Pulls, Light and Sound, Properties of Matter, Forces and Interactions, Energy and Collisions, Chemical Reactions, Color Mixing, Letter Recognition, Water Cycle, Bugs in Our Backyard, and Tower Building. Ms. Kanaly then shared that her PE classes and Mrs. Elbrecht’s STEM classes have collaborated to work

on a Matter and Movement unit.

Board Comments

Mr. Norton remarked that it is apparent that Mrs. Elbrecht has been working hard on curriculum and planning for the new STEM program and that the students seem to be enjoying it and learning a lot. He also reminded those present to attend the Community Forum on Wednesday, 9/19/18.

Mr. Winkelman stated that this is Homecoming week and encouraged those present to attend the Homecoming activities this week and to support the student athletes.

Mr. Winkelman moved, Mr. Madsen seconded to approve the consent agenda as presented. Ayes: Mr. Norton, Mr. Winkelman, Mrs. Combs, Mr. Madsen, Mrs. Smith

Nays: None

Absent: Mr. Eskridge, Mr. Stauss

BUSINESS

ADMINISTRATION

Tiffany Elswick-ES Principal Report-as presented

Dr. Ehlenburg added that the ES staff is working diligently on the new ES math curriculum.

Tim Hayunga-MS/HS Principal Report-as presented

Mr. Hayunga added that he sent out a video with highlights of the Homecoming festivities this week. Activities include:

 Theme dress-up days for each day of the week

 Thursday—Powder Puff Football game at 7:00pm, 8:00 bonfire (weather permitting)

 Friday—1:00pm, Homecoming pep assembly and class competitions in the gymnasium,

including Powder Buff Volleyball game; 5:00pm, Homecoming parade, 7:00pm

Homecoming Football game.

 Saturday—7:00-10:00pm, Homecoming Dance for AHHS

Mr. Hayunga also shared that a press release was issued this afternoon stating that the State of Illinois has made a decision on new 3-8 assessments.

Dr. Ehlenburg-Superintendent Report-as presented

Dr. Ehlenburg reported the she and Mrs. Elswick attended an ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) conference on Monday.

FINANCE

Mrs. Syens gave the BOE members some tax-rate comparisons for Alden-Hebron and Woodstock.

PHYSICAL STRUCTURES/MAINTENANCE-as presented

TRANSPORTATION-as presented

Mrs. Erckfritz stated that things are running smoothly. The new driver is working out well.

Board Comments

Mr. Norton stated that the fall athletic teams are looking good and encouraged those present to come out and enjoy the Homecoming activities.

Mrs. Smith moved, Mr. Winkelman seconded to adjourn the meeting at 8:10 pm. Motion carried.
