Illinois state Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee) has signed off on a U.S. Term Limits (USTL) pledge calling for an amendment to limit the terms of members of Congress.
“It's time to put term limits on the ballot,” Skillicorn, now a 2020 U.S. House candidate in the 14th Congressional District, later added on Twitter.
Skillicorn joins a group of at least 70 other supporters who have also signed off on the amendment pledge, which USTL puts before every announced candidate for federal office.
“Rep. Skillicorn’s support of term limits shows that there are individuals who are willing to put self-interest aside to follow the will of the people," USTL President Philip Blumel said in a press release. "America needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians.”
According to a recent national poll conducted by McLaughlin & Associates on the issue of term limits, more than four in five voters, or 82 percent, are now in favor of a constitutional amendment that will pave the way for term limits. For such legislation to become law, a two-thirds majority is needed in both the House and Senate along with ratification from more than three-fourths of all 50 states.
