Woodstock Chamber of Commerce & Industry issued the following announcement on July 29.
The McHenry County Sheriff's Office has been informed of a scam occurring in our county that is aimed at local businesses. Sales representatives from a company called Universal Adcom or UAC Advertising Specialist (https://www.uac4u.com/) have called local businesses around the county. During the phone call the sales representatives tell the business that they are affiliated with various local organizations, including the local Chamber of Commerce, Fire Department, and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. They sell promotional items such as magnets, calendars, and t-shirts to local businesses and tell them that these organizations will help distribute them.
This company has a history of fraudulent practices and has been reported to numerous Attorney General Offices around the country. In addition they have hundreds of complaints that have been filed against the Better Business Bureau against them. After speaking with some of our local businesses that were scammed by this company we have found out that not only have they stated the Sheriff’s Office would be distributing the promotional items, but also a local library and fire department. We want to caution businesses when having any contact with this company.
If you have had prior contact with this company and feel you are a victim of this scam please make a police report with your local agency. You can also go to Illinois Attorney General’s website and fill out their consumer complaint fraud form at http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/about/contacts.html.
We have attached some photos of the magnets that were produced by Universal Adcom and the picture of the return address.
