Blast from the Past - Paul Siegler and Tibbets Cameron Lumber Co.

Paul F. Siegler was the manager of the Tibbitts-Cameron lumberyard which was located on Hatchery Road by the entrance to Hatchery Park for 26 years. Siegler was born in Princeton, Wisconsin in 1866, was married in 1897, and moved to Spring Grove in 1907 to start his job here. Coal and Lumber were delivered by train to the store. They catered to the local farming and summer home community with all kinds of building material and paints. Coal, posts, sewer tiles, cattle feed and other livestock supplies were also carried by Tibbitts-Cameron. A circa 1910 Tibbitts-Camerson ad stated, "Buy Hocking Valley coal - the kind that leaves no clinkers."

In 1933 Siegler retired because of ill health. His retirement ended a year and a half later when he died suddenly of a fatal heart attack. Al Schmeltzer transferred from the Round Lake Tibbitts-Cameron store to manage the yard. Walter Brown and Art Kattner were hired by Schmeltzer. Both were employed there for over 35 years. One of Walter and Arts’ duties was to unload and deliver coal to people with coal-burning furnaces. In the winter, they would use a horse and sleigh to deliver the coal.

In the late 1950s the Spring Grove Lumber Company purchased Tibbitts-Cameron and built a new building east of the tracks on Blivin Street called Cash and Carry. The old building was still in use, however, but sustained some damage in the 1960s when a coal car ran off the tracks. Eventually it was abandoned and in the 1980s it burned down. The Cash and Carry became Totem Lumber and finally Hines Lumber.

Resident Ben Orbeck donated a piece of lumber stamped with the original company name he found in the attic at 2114 Main Street, which was built around 1900. Russel Tippereiter also donated a Tibbits-Cameron stamped piece of lumber from 2025 W. Sunnyside Beach Drive in Johnsburg that was built in the 1920s. Another artifact donated by Bev Schmitt is a work apron with the company name and advertisement for MuleHide Roof Shingles.
