At a recent board meeting, Nippersink School District 2 recently discussed what to do about the very old roof of Nippersink Middle School.
The roof at Nippersink Middle School has far outlived its expected life of 20 years, and in a recent survey of roof quality throughout the district, almost all of its roof fell into the “very poor” or “poor” categories. During the Sept. 28, Board of Education Meeting, the board discussed various ways to address this issue and repair the state of the roof.
"We should prioritize NMS, but we should probably just core the other buildings as well. They’re out there, that way we have a really good idea of where we're at with those," Nippersink School District Superintendent Thomas Lind said at the board meeting.
A representative created two different proposals for the board to discuss, one excluding the two newest portions of the roof in the estimate and one that does include the option for redoing those newer options alongside the older portions. Those two portions are expected to have roughly 3-5 years left at a quality level, given that they are around 30 years old.
The board discussed multiple different aspects of the project. They discussed the pros and cons of doing the roof all at once or saving some of the portions for later, specifically which would be more financially responsible. They also discussed the timeline, recognizing that they were probably already too late to have the project done in the summer of 2023 because of supply chain issues and wait times. They relayed their thoughts so that a plan could be prepared for a vote.
