Superintendent Moan: 'I don’t think there’s anything wrong with telling people what we're comfortable with'

At its Dec. 13 meeting, the Woodstock Community Unit School District 200 Board of Education considered a nonbinding agreement with the Regional Office of Education that would relocate a safe school above one of the district’s own schools: Clay Academy.

Clay has an upstairs area that is separate from the rest of the school; it has its own entrances and four classrooms and two offices. The ROE said this is just the space that they need, and would pay $10,000 a year for rent plus $30 a day per student for extra incurred costs.

The McHenry Regional Office of Education runs the Evergreen Academy, which is a regional safe school for students who have repeatedly violated schools’ codes or rules. It serves students 6-12 in a smaller environment that allows for more one-on-one work. The program continues to have successful interventions that allow for reintegrations and graduations.

Some of the board members were unsure about this agreement, wanting to get input from the community before they made any decisions. They were also hesitant about the fact that the safe school students and Clay students would share the gym and cafeteria facilities, though at different scheduled times. The board did accept the letter of intent, which is nonbinding, to continue to the discussion.

“We wouldn’t share staff or mix students, what we would do, and again, we can handle this. I think they would want to use the gym, the cafeteria when we're not using it at separate times,” Superintendent Michael Moan said. “But if we're not comfortable with that, then that’s fair to tell them hey, we’re not comfortable with that part of it. And I think it's, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with telling people what we're comfortable with.”

The board uploaded a livestream of its public meeting to the school’s YouTube channel.

The board also discussed preparing to create its budget for the 2023 to 2024 academic year.

The board will meet again at 7 p.m. on Jan. 10 at the second floor of the learning resource center at Woodstock High at 501 West South St..
