David Smith sentenced to eight and a half years in Illinois Department of Corrections for burglary

Jul 8, 2024

Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announced that on July 3, 2024, David A. Smith, 37, of Chicago, Illinois, was sentenced to eight and a half years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of burglary, a Class 2 Felony. Smith entered into a negotiated plea before the Honorable Mark R. Gerhardt which called for an extended term sentence beyond the normal sentencing range. In addition to time in the Department of Corrections, Smith was ordered to pay over $11,000 in restitution.

On January 11, 2020, officers of the Cary Police Department responded to Cary Grove Computers following a burglary alarm. Officers found a side entry door forced open and several thousand dollars worth of computers missing. By collecting local surveillance video, Cary Grove officers were able to identify the vehicle used in commission of the crime and track it to Chicago. Working with Chicago law enforcement, Cary Police Officers were able to locate the vehicle and identify Smith and his associates based on surveillance images from another ongoing burglary investigation out of Cook County.

"The McHenry County State's Attorney's Office takes crimes of theft and vandalism very seriously as they jeopardize the livelihood and stability of local businesses," said Patrick Kenneally.

Kenneally expressed his gratitude to the officers of the Cary Police Department and McHenry County Assistant State's Attorney Tyler Mikan for their thorough investigation and commitment to resident safety.
