Since 1995, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has maintained a right of way through Glacial Park as one of the potential routes for the proposed expansion of Route 53. Despite nearly three decades passing, the expansion project has seen no significant progress. IDOT continues to retain control over this right of way, despite repeated requests for its release.

The McHenry County Conservation District has expressed concerns that until the right of way is returned, there remains a possibility that it could be developed. The sentiment within the community suggests that it is time to return this land to the people of McHenry County.
