Legislators in Springfield are preparing for the final four weeks of their session, with both the House and Senate meeting every week until the scheduled adjournment on May 31. Among the critical issues is the passage of a Fiscal Year 2026 budget for Illinois, set to begin on July 1, 2025. Senator Craig Wilcox emphasized the need for fiscal responsibility amid a tight budget year.

A significant concern is addressing a $770 million shortfall facing public transit systems like Metra, PACE, and the Chicago Transportation Authority (CTA). Wilcox, who serves on the Senate Transportation Committee, highlighted efforts towards equitable board reconfiguration across six counties.

Governor JB Pritzker's proposed budget has sparked debate due to its size and associated tax hikes. "Gov. JB Pritzker’s proposed budget is nearly $15 billion larger than when he first took office," noted Wilcox. He expressed concerns about Illinois' high tax burden and potential impacts on investment and family businesses.

Republicans have voiced opposition to new taxes funding expanded government benefits. They argue these measures would increase costs for consumers and challenge family-owned enterprises.

On May 1, Illinois honored fallen law enforcement officers at a memorial ceremony in Springfield. The event also recognized K-9s lost in service for the first time. "This ceremony was a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of our law enforcement officers," said Wilcox.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson recently sought financial support from Springfield for various city projects. Wilcox cautioned against transferring fiscal burdens from Chicago to suburban taxpayers.

Starting May 7, 2025, adults will need a REAL ID or equivalent identification for domestic flights and certain federal facilities access. However, it won't be necessary for driving or voting.

Senator Wilcox announced several community outreach events this summer starting June 26 with an ICASH Unclaimed Property Event in Fox Lake.

Additionally, Illinois residents can dispose of household hazardous waste at Prairie Ridge High School on June 7. Pre-registration is required for this event co-sponsored by McHenry County.
