State Senator Craig Wilcox (R-McHenry) has welcomed the signing of bipartisan legislation he co-sponsored to expand opportunities for new farmers in Illinois. Senate Bill 2372 aims to address the aging farming population and a decrease in new farmers by increasing access to land, training, and financial support.

“Illinois’ agricultural future depends on our ability to support the young and beginning farmers who will feed and sustain our communities in the decades to come,” said Wilcox. “This bill creates real opportunities through mentorship, land access, and state-backed funding. It ensures farming doesn’t become a profession only available to those with generational wealth or existing family farms.”

The legislation establishes a Beginning Farmer Support Program within the Illinois Department of Agriculture. It also broadens eligibility for state-backed low-interest loans and provides tax credits to landowners who lease or sell land to new farmers. The law supports technical training partnerships with community colleges and agriculture programs.

“Our rural economies thrive when young people see a future in farming as a viable career path,” said Wilcox. “This bill helps remove barriers that too often keep talented, driven individuals from pursuing a career in agriculture and farming.”

Agriculture advocates and educational institutions have shown strong support for the law, noting its potential to create a more sustainable farming sector. Illinois is recognized as a national leader in corn, soybean, and specialty crop production, and supporters believe SB2372 will help maintain this status by supporting new generations of farmers.

Wilcox was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois' 32nd Senate District in 2018, succeeding Pamela Althoff. More information about his background can be found at https://ilga.gov/senate/Senator.asp?GA=103&MemberID=2976.
