Details of a study of Algonquin's water and sewer rate system were presented at the Jan. 12 committee-of-the-whole meeting of the Algonquin Village Board.
The study was carried out to determine if the village should add a flat fee for water and sewage services. The study found that the fee would provide some stability as it would offset revenue lost in tax subsidies relating to the home rule sales tax. Village trustees were told that without the flat fee, revenue fluctuates based on water usage and other factors, which can cause planning issues as cost-effectiveness is lost through a lack of capital planning.
Revenue from water and sewage services is typically utilized for maintenance and repairs. Engineering company RHMG and village staff developed eight rates for daily operations. Because the entire board was not present for this meeting, the matter was postponed to a future meeting to allow for further deliberation.
Village trustees also discussed a recommendation to end a red light camera safety program following driver behavior changes. The program consists of cameras installed at intersections to curb violations. Further discussion about ending the red light camera program will be held at a later date.
