Skillicorn denounces school funding bill in current form

Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee) says he's all for school funding reform but not the way Senate Bill 1 would get it done, favoring Chicago schools over the rest of the state and ignoring high property tax rates.

“Bailing out Chicago schools at the expense of every school in the state is outrageous,” Skillicorn said in a statement. “I did not support SB 1 when it passed the legislature on May 31st and I will not support SB 1 unless legislation to address TIF reform and Chicago's under assessed property wealth are included.”

SB1 has passed both legislative houses but is being held back by Democratic lawmakers who fear an amendatory veto by Gov. Bruce Rauner. For his part, Rauner has called lawmakers back to session to make changes to the bill and send it on to him.

“Despite what officials in the city of Chicago say, the city has other options to generate the funding they need to pay for their schools without turning to the state for a bailout,” Skillicorn said in his statement. “…Suburban property owners already pay higher taxes and SB1 wants the suburbs to pay more, digger an even deeper hole. State wide property tax assessment reform and TIF reform are the only answer to the school funding crisis!"
