Huntley Community School District 158 issued the following announcement on June 11.
The Huntley High School Red Raiders baseball team took second place at the IHSA Class 4A State Tournament, falling 4-3 to Plainfield North after a valiant comeback effort.
The finish is the best in school history, topping the 2010 team that took 4th place at state. After fighting its way through a tough playoff schedule, the Red Raiders came up just short in the championship game, which also would have marked coach Andy Jakubowski’s 300th career win.
After trailing for most of the game, the Red Raiders staged a comeback in the final inning, closing the margin to one run.
“I’m so happy with our guys fighting back,” Jakubowski told the Northwest Herald. “You know what? You have a runner on second base and the winning run at the plate in a state championship game, you can’t ask for much more.”
The team finished the season with a record 33 wins.
“Obviously, we failed to get that big hit,” Jakubowski told the Daily Herald. They made big defensive plays in big situations. Unfortunately, we came out on the short end.”
