HUNTLEY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT 158: HHS Softball’s Petryniec and Giese Earn Coach and Player of the Year Honors

Huntley Community School District 158 issued the following announcement on June 27.

Huntley High School’s Mark Petryniec was named 2018 Softball Coach of the Year by the Northwest Herald, recognizing his leadership during a season that saw the Red Raiders set a school records for wins, notch a streak of 15 consecutive wins, and capture Petryniec’s 300th career victory. In addition, 2018 graduate Tiffany Giese took Player of the Year honors from the paper, recognizing her accomplishments including historic statistics in both pitching and hitting.

The Red Raiders finished the season with its fourth straight Class 4A regional title and third straight Fox Valley Conference championship before falling in sectional play.

Petryniec’s career record now stands at 314-214, bolstered by a record over the past four years of 111-31.

He chatted with the paper for a Q&A about his career to date, his experiences coaching, and his superstitions during the season, among other topics.

Giese, who will play next year at the Division-I University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, finished the season 24-3 as a pitcher. Her 89 career wins are a school record. From the batter’s box, Giese’s.597 average and 83 hits mark one of the best individual seasons in state history. She led all area players in both runs scored (64) and steals (40), reaching base at a 64.3 percent clip with 17 doubles and 24 RBIs.

She spoke with the paper about her career accomplishments, her future, and her habits during the season.

Giese was joined on the paper’s All-Area team by fellow Red Raiders freshman Briana Bower, junior Sofia Tenuta, and senior Autumn Kasal on the First Team, and freshman Marley Reicher, junior Grace Kutz, and sophomore Teagan O’Rilley on the Second Team.
