COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 155: Individualized Learning in Lanes

School

Community High School District 155 issued the following announcement on Aug. 24.

STRIVE students have individualized programs to support them as they work toward their transition outcomes and goals. Students will be assigned to lanes, as known as tiers, based on their abilities. Students can participate in more than one lane at a time and can be placed between lanes. These tiers serve to structure each student’s day.

Lane 1

The first lane is designed to meet the needs of students with limited skills in communication, sensory, and/or academics who require consistent sensory support.

  • Lane 1 students attend the STRIVE program Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. They go on community outings on Friday.
  • They receive instruction in pre-vocational tasks, management of sensory needs, and functional academics.
Lane 2

  • Students in lane 2 attend the STRIVE program four days a week, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with one day dedicated to independent living skills acquisition.
  • Under the supervision of a job coach, students work about two hours per week at a job site.
  • Attending community outings on Fridays is recommended.
Lane 3

  • Lane 3 assists students who have a demonstrated need for independent living and functional academic support.
  • Students in lane 3 attend the STRIVE program two days each week from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Under the supervision of a job coach, students work approximately two days per week for a total of four hours at a job site.
  • Attending Friday community outings is recommended
Lane 4

This tier includes a job training placement for students with more independent vocational skills. Students will have different expectations and will be challenged to perform with higher level skills.

  • The academic focus is designed for students who are almost ready for competitive employment and/or college courses on a part-time basis.
  • Students attend the STRIVE program two days per week from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • They are able to maintain a vocational training site for 2 days a week.
  • Friday community outings are recommended.
Lane 5

  • Students attend community college and/or are competitively employed on a part-time basis, but they require minimal academic support to access accommodations.
  • Lane 5 students attend the STRIVE program on Fridays for two hours. Students will set individual goals in study skills, organizational skills, employment skills, and/or social/emotional skills.
