According to the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) website, individuals who do not have a U.S. passport, do not visit military bases, or do not use airplanes as a mode of domestic transportation do not need a REAL ID. However, those who fly, visit military bases, or secure federal facilities must obtain a REAL ID if they lack a passport or passport card. The SOS website confirms that all driver services facilities are issuing REAL ID cards.

The new deadline for the Real ID program was announced on May 1. MyStateline.com reports that the program was created in 2005 but has faced delays due to backlogs at department of motor vehicle facilities. Starting May 7, 2025, the Transportation Safety Administration will require either a Real ID or a valid passport for air travel. The Real ID Act was passed in response to the September 11 attacks.

Senator Dave Syverson was first elected to the Senate in 1993 and is a lifelong resident of Illinois. In the Senate, he serves as Spokesperson for several committees including Insurance Committee and Health and Human Services Committee. He is also Co-Chair of both the bipartisan Hospital Transformation Committee and Medicaid Reform Committee and is involved in various other committees such as Public Health and Local Government.
