On January 24, 2022, four victims entered their car to go to a store. Quran Broomfield and his co-offenders approached the car, ordered everyone out, and took their phones and personal effects at gunpoint. The offenders unsuccessfully tried to enter the victims’ home, upon which Broomfield fired several times at the house upon leaving. One of the victims sustained a gunshot wound in the shoulder by a co-offender. Broomfield, a juvenile at the time of the incident, was subsequently charged as an adult for this offense.
The McHenry County Treasurer's Office and the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office have identified a tax scam targeting real estate owners with outstanding taxes. According to officials, fraudulent letters purporting to be from McHenry County are being sent to these individuals.
In an order released on July 2, the United States Supreme Court declined to take up a legal challenge to Illinois' "assault weapon" ban but left open the possibility of hearing the case in the future. Petitioners had requested that the nation's highest court issue an injunction against enforcing the ban. This request followed conflicting rulings on multiple challenges to the law, including a temporary injunction issued by a judge in the Southern District of Illinois that was later overturned by the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, where a challenge is still pending.

Most criminal sentences to the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) are not nearly what they appear to be.
