Jury selection has commenced in the trial of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, who is facing 23 charges including racketeering, bribery, and wire fraud. The charges stem from an alleged bribery scheme involving Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), the state's largest utility. Madigan, who served in the Illinois House from 1971 until his resignation in 2021, was a significant political figure in Illinois and also chaired the Democratic Party of Illinois.
