Community High School District 155 issued the following announcement on Oct. 9.
Crystal Lake Central Theatre Presents "Radium Girls. Performances of the fall play are on October 25, 26, and 27 at 7:00 P.M. Tickets can be purchased online. Tickets will cost $8 for adults and $5 for students (or free for students with an activity pass).
Radium Girls is D.W. Gregory's adaptation of Kate Moore's much acclaimed book, The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women.
The play tells the story of what happened after Marie Curie’s discovery of radium made headlines across the nation.
It was lauded as a wonder drug of the medical community and became a staple in many products, from body lotion to tonic water.
Meanwhile, hundreds of American girls toiled amidst the glowing dust of the radium dial factories.
Told that the chemicals and the paint were safe, these women ingested deadly amounts of the radium by following the suggested practices of their employer, the United States Radium Corporation.
However, the factories that once offered golden opportunities began ignoring all claims of the gruesome side effects, as well as the women's cries for justice.
As the fatal poison takes hold, the brave girls engage in what will become a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights that will echo for centuries to come.
