CRYSTAL LAKE COMMUNITY CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL DISTRICT 47: Lundahl Student Wins Meemic Foundation Art Contest

Crystal Lake Community Consolidated School District 47 recently issued the following announcement.

Lundahl eighth grader Kaitlynn Matsumoto was selected as a winner of the Masterpieces Art Contest sponsored by The Meemic Foundation for the Future of Education. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit company started in 1992 by the Meemic Insurance Company. Over 1,500 entries were submitted from students in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Georgia. After three rounds of judging, 50 art pieces were selected.

Each year, Meemic invites K-12th grade students to submit original artwork featuring an annual contest theme. This year’s theme options included “seasons,” “school memory,” and “selfie.” Matsumoto chose an outdoor theme inspired by her brother’s tattoos depicting Japanese culture. “I love Japanese things because they are cool and bright,” she said.

When Lundahl special education teacher Ashley Hubbe saw the contest promotion, she immediately thought of Matsumoto. “I knew the minute I saw this contest that I had to have Kaitlynn enter,” said Hubbe. “Kaitlynn has created many art pieces for the staff here at Lundahl out of the kindness of her heart. She uses her artwork to make not only herself happy but those around her as well.”

“I felt very happy and proud that I won,” said Matsumoto. “I know now that if I keep working hard I can do more with my art.”

Matsumoto’s artwork will be professionally framed and put on permanent display at Meemic Insurance headquarters located in Auburn Hills, Michigan. An art gallery open house will be held June 21 at Meemic headquarters to display all winning student artwork. Finalists’ artwork will also be posted on the Meemic Foundation website. As a winner, Matsumoto will receive a Chromebook and certificate of appreciation presented by local Meemic Foundation advocate Keith Roy of Keith Roy Insurance in McHenry, Illinois. In addition, Lundahl Middle School (a Meemic Foundation Club member) will receive a $300 credit at Office Depot.

Meemic Insurance was started by a group of teachers in 1950. Both companies remain firmly focused on serving and giving back to dedicated educational communities.
